A few months ago, I received a new tote bag as a gift. It had everything a commuter could ask for and pockets for just about anything you could think of. Water bottle, umbrella, gym clothes, laptop, planner, lunch; you name it, there was a section for it in this bag. I still adore and regularly use this bag, but after looking into causes for my annoying shoulder pain, I understood why it wasn’t smart to carry a tote that big to and from work every day.
According to PopSugar, “If you’re carrying a heavy bag, you could be tacking on an unnecessary 15 pounds to one side of your body with every step. According to celebrity trainer Anna Kaiser, ‘You’re probably overcompensating with your lower back and creating instability, and that’s going to make you susceptible to injury.'” That’s a lot of unnecessary stress to be putting on your body!
Last month, I made the switch to Team Backpack. Accessories, including pocketbooks, are some of my favorite purchases to make, so I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to find something cute. Surprisingly, a lot of brands make really stylish and practical backpacks that are perfect for a commuter on the go.
My first stop was Macy’s, and I lucked out. After searching the site, I found the I.N.C. Elliah Medium Convertible Backpack on sale – after tax and shipping, it came out to around $50.
It fits all the necessities without going overboard on weight, and both of my shoulders can share the burden. My favorite part about this bag (besides the sale price!) is that the straps connect, allowing you to use the bag as a crossbody if and when you feel like switching it up.
I went for small, simple and a color that would match everything in my closet. However, Macy’s has a huge range of fashion backpacks. You can check them out here. Some other stores I looked at for fashion backpacks included the below. Click the links to head over to their selection of fashion backpacks!
