If I had a dollar for every time someone told me to read Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur, I would be a millionaire.
I finally picked it up. With so many great reviews, why wouldn’t I? That, and every other quote on Tumblr came from the damn thing. I knew I was missing out. The book is divided into four parts and is filled with poetry, so I felt it would be a quick read for me.
I realized I was very, very late. This book touched me, and even educated me, in ways I didn’t think I could be. If I had this book three and a half years ago, I may have treated myself with kindness and love while going through a similar situation. However, this book taught me that it’s OK to hurt. We all do. We’re only human.
you tell me to quiet down cause
my opinions make me less beautiful
but i was not made with a fire in my belly
so i could be put out
i was not made with a lightness on my tongue
so i could be easy to swallow
i was made heavy
half blade and half silk
difficult to forget and not easy
for the mind to follow
Now that I’ve passed that point in my life, this book did something even more profound. It told me how strong I was because of the demons I destroyed. It showed me how beautiful I’ve become, because I learned how to love myself and appreciate who I am, inside and out, despite what happened to me in the past. It is sad, relatable, inspiring and uplifting, all in the span of a few pages.
It is clear that Rupi Kaur genuinely loves, appreciates and cares about the well-being of her readers. If it wasn’t obvious from the book itself, her love letter to the reader at the end of it makes it certain. Her lesson (one of many) is very true: we must lift each other up and those around us who are hurting. We must love with everything in us. Despite our defeats, we must continue to move forward. Through this, we will blossom into something incredible.
To quote the chapters, if you are hurting, loving, breaking or healing, read this book. If you need a reminder of how your existent makes the world so very special, read this book. If you forgot how, as a woman, you are important, courageous and should not be silenced, read this book. You won’t be disappointed. I’ll end with one of my favorites from it. Enjoy, and be sure to let me know what you think.
i do not want to have you
to fill the empty parts of me
i want to be full on my own
i want to be so complete
i could light a whole city
i want to have you
cause the two of us combined
could set it on fire
